I don’t enjoy being disabled, but it’s something I’ll be proud about.

I’m going to decorate my crutches with stickers

If I can afford it someday I’d like different color crutches to go with my different styles.

It’s my disability, and if it’s going to ruin my life I’m going to make it pretty while it does it.

I’m not going to let people ignore that I’m disabled.

I could technically live without my crutches, I do it while I’m at work just because it’s a hassle to use them while working. But it hurts like a bitch.

I’m going to prevent pain for myself and not feel shame for it.

Society tries so hard to make me feel shame for being disabled.

I hear whispers when I use my crutches, I see the stares. I know about all the shit the world does trying to get rid of disabled people and make it harder for us.

“Well you’re not really disabled if-”

“Disabled people just get in the way”

“What do they really contribute to society?”

“They take money from the government for made up diseases you can’t even pronounce”

I’ve heard all of these statements, whether to me directly or just someone I over heard. And I know others have too.

The world isn’t built for disabled people. And if we let them ignore us it’ll stay that way.

So no, I’m not going to let people make me feel ashamed for my disabilities.

I’m going to be proud about it until ableism is no longer normalized, and our world is easier to live in.

Pride is the opposite of shame. I refuse to be ashamed.
